GC2 ministry strategy

WCG Ministry Development
Patterns and programs of Great Commandment - Great Commission ministry

GC2 ministry has four primary patterns:

Great Commandment - Great Commission (GC2) ministry involves a disciplemaking strategy that...
  • is rooted in God's triune love and life that give form to GC2 values
  • pursues four patterns of loving and living (see box to the right) that flow from the disciplemaking priorities and methods of Jesus and his apostles adapted to our 21st century contexts
  • provides the focus for balanced programming
  • is fruitfully advanced by ministers who through the transforming work of the Spirit are growing in Christ-like character and competency

Nurturing believers (building believers)

Expanding his command to “make disciples,” Jesus spoke of “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). A new believer is baptized as a sign of faith in Christ and entrance into his community, the church. Baptism illustrates both saving faith and the growth that occurs as a new believer is built up in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

The WCG seeks to participate with the Spirit in nurturing believers through the use of ACTS:
  • Adoration. A spirit of worship, expectation and hope coming from a  posture of prayerful dependence.
  • Community. The demonstration of intentional, caring, committed and accountable relationships within the local church.
  • Truth. Devotion to the centrality of God’s word which results in a deepened understanding of the triune God.
  • Serving. An ongoing desire to give attention to the needs of others, especially to brothers and sisters in the  church. Giving of personal help to others by adjusting personal lifestyles to meet those needs.

Equipping workers

Jesus spoke of teaching disciples “to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). As believers grow in their love for Jesus and for his church, they need to be equipped to minister to believers and nonbelievers in Jesus’ name (Ephesians 4:10-12). This equipping includes training and coaching that encourages faithful participation in Jesus’ disciplemaking ministry in and through the church.

Engaging nonbelievers (winning the lost)

Jesus’ instruction to “go” (Matthew 28:19) implies that the church is to reach out to nonbelievers - sharing God’s love and the gospel with those Jesus refers to as the “lost” (Luke 19:10; 15:1-32).

The WCG equips its members for this work of relational evangelism by teaching and advocating a lifestyle that is referred to as eternal CPR:
  • Cultivating genuine friendships with nonbelievers in ways that develop loving, authentic, relational bridges without compromising obedience to Christ.
  • Planting into those friendships through actions and words, with wisdom, the positive difference a relationship with Jesus makes in a person’s life.
  • Reaping a follower of Jesus by sharing with those friends a clear presentation of the gospel of God's grace in Christ.

Multiplying leaders and ministries

Jesus devoted much of his earthly ministry to choosing, training and commissioning leaders - the twelve apostles in particular. Following Jesus’ resurrection, these leaders, led by the Holy Spirit, identified, coached, appointed and sent additional leaders. As a result, the church grew in unity, maturity and in numbers.

The Spirit continues to gift some believers within the church to be shepherd-leaders of God’s “flock.” Existing leaders have the responsibility to...
  • identify, equip, deploy and coach emerging leaders
  • assist in the multiplication of new disciplemaking ministries
  • assist in the multiplication of new churches that will multiply new churches.
