Is There a Doctor in the House?

By Neville Bowes

Yes! Doctor Nombulelo (Bulie) Magula is that doctor who recently qualified as a Specialist Physician.

Allow me to introduce her to you with the pride and honour she so richly deserves. "Bulie," as she is lovingly known by her family and the members of the Durban Church, has been a member since 1997. Bulie has a young daughter Abi, aged five. Her mother Doris, also in the medical field, is a matron at King Edward Hospital in Durban, and is a long-standing member. Bulie's father, Zwide, has been attending for some time.

Bulie was educated at Junior School in Kwa-Mashu and High School at Inanda Seminary, gaining her BSC at the University of Cape Town in 1990, from where she moved to Medunsa in Pretoria to begin her Medical Studies.

At last she was becoming fully involved with her "first love" - a medical career - and by 1995 she was a qualified practitioner. Then followed a period of internship at Johannesburg General Hospital during 1996, after which she came to King Edward Hospital in Durban in 1997. A specialist in training programme was entered into at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Durban (1998) which turned out to be arduous in the extreme!

Compulsory practical work was required at King Edward Hopital, sometimes involving 24 hour shifts. Bulie found that the long hours, as well as dealing with terminal diseases such as AIDS and others, was resulting in great stress. Family trials at the time certainly did not help matters. Her daughter was an inspiration for her to reach her ultimate goal.

Bulie had her sights set on becoming a Specilaist Physician! As the time of her exams drew near, the stress mounted and prayers were requested from all church members. There is no doubt that her passing both the written and oral examinations was due to God's intervention. Bulie was also greatly encouraged by Gordon Green who suggested she read the first chapter of the book of Daniel during those difficult days.

Graduation took place in May of this year and Bulie is now a qualified specialist physician. But this is not the end. She plans to continue her studies in the field of HIV research, here in South Africa as well as overseas.

Bulie still needs encouragement and prayers of all, as she has an overwhelming desire to serve God and the people of her country.
