SpOL 065 TRUE GRIP ON REALITY
A ninety year old lady was becoming increasingly fearful that death was closing in on her. So she went to see her doctor and told him about the aches and pains she was experiencing.
The doctor gave her a thorough examination, and when she returned a week later to hear the results, the doctor told her that she was in remarkable condition for her age.
Unsatisfied with his assessment, she reminded him about her aches and pains. The doctor replied, "Well, that's what happens when you get up in your nineties. I can't make you any younger, you know."
The lady looked him in the eye and said, "Doctor, I don't want to get younger. I want to keep on getting older."
This woman had a grip on reality.
We all know we're going to die, and it's all too easy to let the fear of death dictate how we feel about life.
I recently saw an interview with a professor of theological ethics who was asked if he thought 9/11 changed the world. He replied: "No, it is 33AD that changed the world."
That thought resonated within me and continues to do so, as we approach the time for celebrating Jesus' first coming. We need to narrate our lives in light of Jesus Christ, the son of God, not 9/11.
The apostle John gave us three important themes in his first epistle. He told us:
God is light. God is life. And God is love.
That's the true grip on reality. Whoever follows Jesus walks in the light. Whoever believes in Jesus has crossed over from death to life. And whoever knows Jesus knows love.
The Father sent the Son into the world not to condemn it but to save it. If anyone really wants to see the true light and experience love and true life, then step into the circle of reality with Jesus and focus on him. Jesus gives the true grip on reality.
I'm Joseph Tkach, speaking of life.
