Beginnings God cannot be seen with microscopes or telescopes or discovered through experiments. But how can we believe in something that is beyond physical sensing and measuring? — 2.4 minutes.

Beginnings

In his book, The Nature of Space and Time, the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking wrote, "Almost everyone now believes that the universe and time itself had a beginning at the Big Bang."

That would mean that there was no time, space or matter before the Big Bang. Naturally, our inquiring minds want to know the answer to the question, if nothing existed, what caused the Big Bang?

The scientific method, of course, would exclude any thought of the supernatural. That’s because, as any Christians should know, God cannot be seen with microscopes or telescopes or discovered through experiments. It is simply not possible to examine God in a laboratory.

By definition, God is transcendent and beyond our human senses. God is invisible, undetectable and immeasurable.

And there’s the rub!

How can we believe in something that is beyond physical sensing and measuring?

Like many others, I’ve asked myself those questions, but then I ask myself these: Did everything come into existence by itself? Did the universe organize itself? Does life come from the non-living?

I ask myself, “Which is easier to believe: that everything simply burst out of nothing, or that that there is a God who created everything out of nothing, even if he did use a Big Bang?”

Whichever we believe, our belief is based on faith. But in the case of believing in God, it is not a blind faith. God has taken the initiative to reveal himself to humanity, and he has done it though Jesus Christ.

There is enough historical evidence to know that Jesus was a real person who lived and died in first century Judea. And, according to the apostle Paul, there were more than 500 people in addition to the disciples and the women mentioned in the four Gospels, who saw Jesus alive after his death on the cross. And then there is the personal assurance that the Holy Spirit gives believers, the transforming inner peace of loving fellowship with God and with others.

We can’t measure the Creator God or find him with sophisticated scientific equipment, but we can certainly know him – through Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit.

I’m Joseph Tkach speaking of LIFE.
