Hello my younger brothers and sisters:

How are the SEP camp prep coming along? I just would like to highlight if I may, that we cannot overemphasize the need for all of us to be trained so that we can be more effective in our youth camps.

1. Feel free to ask questions on how to best handle situations you may have encountered before. I always tell Staff applicants here that we are given a one-week window (as camp) to really make a difference in the lives of our youth.

2. This is the time to set aside our own agenda and work together toward our common missions.

3. Come highly prepared for our camps if you are serving as staff. If you are dealing with some personal issues - get some counseling way ahead of camp so that you are able to process it and give counsel when necessary.

4. The staff is there to help the campers because SEP is for our campers. This means we are there to give. We cannot give what dont have. Prior to SEP - be very attuned to your needs - then at SEP be very attuned to the needs of your campers.

5. If you are serving as an activity staff - learn the sport, craft whatever, really well. And give the campers the opportunity to shine in your activity by encouraging them and following basic teaching plans. You show how it is done. You give clear instructions, you let them do it while you monitor at a distance, you let them do it on their own.

Be physically prepared. SEP is not the time when we can catch up on our sleep. Begin eating healthy now. Some of you do not eat vegetables - and if your campers ask you "bakit ayaw mo kainin ang gulay?" - I hope you have a better response than... "kasi... it's so... gulay... i only eat fish...! hehehehe"

Every year - we learn something new from the campers, from the staff and from our experiences.

Prioritize the SEP staff training.

Pay attention to the details.

Imagine the camp as if you are a camper for the first time.

If you can teach only one thing - what would it be?
