WCG minister wins preaching scholarship contest: Wisconsin Dells Associate Pastor John Torgerson has been awarded a third place in the "Edwin J. Omark Scholarship for Excellence in Preaching" contest at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, MN. The scholarships are granted each year through the generous provision of Dean Emeritus, Edwin J. Omark, to encourage “proficiency in the ministry of preaching and to highlight its importance.”
The scholarship is open to middle/senior degree students and to M.Div. degree students who submit manuscripts of their sermons. Three faculty members select six finalists, who then submit a videotape of the sermon. A second faculty panel then chooses the three scholarship winners. John is the second WCG pastor to win this scholarship. John Stonecypher, pastor of the Des Moines and Mason City, Iowa churches did so in 2003.
The M.Div. program at Bethel allows students to take classes via email and Internet with occasional visits to the campus. John Torgerson, a retired Wisconsin Dells physics and computer teacher and avid bike rider, has been a leader in the Wisconsin Dells congregation for over 30 years and has served as Associate Pastor for eight years. He will graduate from Bethel next spring with a Masters of Divinity degree that he began earning while still teaching.
There were three high school graduates from the Community of Faith WCG congregation in Memphis, TN: Katherine Nelson, Kingsbury High, Memphis, Derek Perry, Craigmont High, Memphis, and Ashley Todd, Germantown High, Germantown.
