Witnessing in prison

I have lived in prison for the past 14 years. It is not difficult to imagine the tumultuous environment and constant ridicule that a Christian is bombarded with daily. Yet, Christ is the light within us and we stand out in darkness as a bright shining light.

I was honored with a Positive Achievement Award, which is given to an exemplary inmate who has achieved educational goals, encourages and helps other men, teaches and is a positive role model. I was given the opportunity to give a speech, and I could only emphasize the importance of God working through me to exhibit such a positive attitude.

We have an obligation, as commanded, to stand courageous and allow Christ to exhibit a Christlike attitude, as we witness in all circumstances. I have found that unbelievers are curious as to how my attitude can be so pleasant. They question how I can be nonviolent, peaceful, humble, forgiving and content in such an environment.

Their curiosity allows them to see that I have something they do not. That something is Jesus Christ. Their curiosity only authenticates the importance of how Christ's attitude must be projected in our walk and is able to penetrate the unbeliever.

As an ex-con, if Christ can witness through me to cold-hearted criminals, he can and must witness through all Christians in any environment. Let's all abide in the fullness of the Holy Spirit so we can be the vessels of Christ's message as we bring glory to God.
