WCG in Philippines

GUZON.jpg (37269 bytes)Eugenio Guzon was born Nov. 17, 1954, to Catholic parents. He is the oldest of 10 children. He was raised in a family that believed in the basic values of the fear of God, diligence, hard work, doing your best and serving others.

Deep in his heart, Eugene felt that one thing he would like to live for is serving others. He keeps discovering how and to what extent this is to be.

Mr. Guzon married Lourdes Mamaril in 1982 in a church double wedding along with his brother Pio. They have an 18-year-old daughter, Joyce, who is in her second year of college. Those 20 years of marriage have been a continuing blessing as they live by their family vision to be "A godly, happy family, united in dreams, love and service to God and man."

Mr. Guzon graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in agribusiness management in 1978. In 1979 and 1980 he took several units toward a master’s degree in public administration.

In 1995, after the doctrinal changes, he enrolled for some units leading to a career in missions at the Asian Theological Seminary. He also began a master’s degree in business administration at Ateneo University in 1996, which he finished in 1999. He is currently taking classes in family ministry at Ateneo de Manila University, and is a student in the doctor of ministry program at the International Seminary of Theology—Asia.

Now at age 47, he recognizes even more the involvement and sovereignty of God in the life of a person. He sees God’s hand in sometimes seemingly unrelated ways to shape a person for a task and eventually for his life journey.

"It is amazing how God can use circumstances, adversities, people’s example and encouragement in shaping a person’s life and destiny."

His conversion experience

In 1975, Mr. Guzon was led to join small Bible study groups sponsored by Navigators and Campus Crusade for Christ in the Philippines at the college campus. It is through these that he learned about salvation in Christ and during those times he accepted Christ as his Savior.

He later met a WCG member who had a lot of PT magazines on his table in the dormitory. Those magazines were helpful resources for spiritual edification and also paved the way for Mr. Guzon to come in contact with the Worldwide Church of God. He was baptized in May 1977 at age 23, now 25 years ago.

One of the things that helped him grow spiritually was local church involvement.

Mr. Guzon attended a big congregation in Manila for a few years, until, because of business reverses, he moved to his hometown to concentrate on the family business. He became a member of the Pampanga church and that is where he received more opportunities for discovering his gifts, getting closer to God and the members, and training for service in the church.

Mr. Guzon said: "What God wants is for us to prepare ourselves and make ourselves available for God’s use. Our service and value to him is not based on position, but in our heart and devotion to him."

In 1987, after two years of serving in the small local church, he was ordained a deacon. Three years later, in May 1990, he was ordained an elder. That same day, then- Regional Director Rod Matthews asked him if he would consider being in the full-time ministry, and he accepted. That is now 12 years ago, and that is what started a challenging, meaningful and exciting journey in the ministry.

Other responsibilities

As a church employee, Mr. Guzon has been involved in different facets of ministry. He was assigned first as assistant pastor in the Quezon City church from 1990 to 1992. He then became an interim pastor of the Marikina church from 1992 to 1993. He was moved to the regional office as financial services manager in the later part of 1993, where he has served to the present. His other responsibilities since then included, being general manager of the Federation of Share Cooperatives of the Philippines, the church’s social and livelihood development arm.

At present he also serves as area coordinator for Metro Manila and adjoining provinces. Until recently, he also was pastor of the small outreach group in Japan, whom he visits three or four times a year for equipping and mentoring. He is also senior pastor of the Palawan churches.

Since 1999, he has been a member of the Rotary Club of Centennial Quezon City. He will serve as the club’s president until June 2003.

Mr. Guzon sees his new role as national director as a privilege to serve God in a different capacity. Knowing that he is like a clay jar, with limitations and all, he surrenders his will to the Lord, and is willing to offer his best for his use.

His vision is to see a spiritually vibrant, viable and visible WCG Philippine church, led by Jesus Christ in making a difference in the world for the glory of God.
