Leontine Johnson awarded Bellamy memorial scholarship

CHICAGO, Illinois—Leontine Johnson, a graduate of Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Illinois, is the first Mary Lee Bellamy Memorial Scholarship recipient. She had a 3.6 grade point average and will attend Xavier University in Ohio to study medicine.

The Mary Lee Bellamy Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Mary Lee Bellamy. Mrs. Bellamy was a longtime WCG member. She served the church of Jesus Christ faithfully for more than 40 years as a member, deaconess and elder’s wife. Mrs. Bellamy could often be found visiting the sick and shut-ins, providing for the many secret needs of the elderly, and giving words of counsel and encouragement to those in need.

Mrs. Bellamy was deeply concerned about the young people of the church. She was particularly concerned that church youths obtain the best education possible, set goals and strive for achievement of those goals. Her life and example inspired the Chicago South church to establish the Mary Lee Bellamy Memorial Scholarship in her memory. Mary died July 21, 2002.

The scholarship is offered to people who seek to better themselves through the pursuit of higher education or training. Through this scholarship we hope to recognize them and assist them in achieving their goals.

It is open to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational technical school. The scholarship is awarded based on character, community service and involvement in extracurricular activities.

The founding scholarship committee consisted of Juanita Dumas, Brenda High, Sandra Nelson and Barbara Williamson.
