Reuben James Salazar
earns Eagle Scout award

HARLINGEN, Texas—Reuben James Salazar, 14, has attained the rank of Eagle Scout in a troop sponsored by the Harlingen congregation for three years. He is the youngest Eagle Scout in the history of the Rio Grande Valley Council.

Reuben is the son of Ruben Salazar and Alma Antonacci. He has gone on to participate in two Order of the Arrow conclaves and has become a Brotherhood member.

It was hard work, but he said: “It has been one of the best decisions of my life. Scouting has had a tremendous impact on my life and on my outlook of the world around me.”

The Troop 12 scoutmaster is Tony Antonacci, an elder in the church. Most of the boys have made it to Life Scout under his leadership and are only one step away from being Eagle Scouts. Troop 12 has high visibility in the Rio Grande Valley because of its involvement in community projects and public service ventures.

In December 2000, the troop was awarded the Environmental Champions Award in the Rio Grande Valley. Reuben has been at the lead in many food drives, fund-raisers, charitable endeavors, drug awareness programs and neighborhood programs.

Many Valley organizations and businesses have matched funds that the troop worked hard to earn. The Rio Grande Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America has high respect for the accomplishments of Troop 12 and the short time period in which it has accomplished a great number of major advancements. Daniel Flores Jr., pastor.
