SEP Colorado:
hearts filled with joy

By Cliff Snyder and Sarah Miles

SEP Colorado’s inaugural camp is now in the books, and what a wonderful and successful camp it was! On July 19, about 50 campers and staff came together at a church camp named Camp Colorado about 40 miles southwest of Denver in the foothills of Pike National Forest. The camp is owned by the Church of the Brethren and is at an elevation of 7,500 feet, surrounded by 60-foot lodge-pole pines.

We had 30 campers ranging in age from 10 to 16 and coming from the states of Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas and Texas. More than 20 campers accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

We kept the older and younger campers together for many of the activities. We were happy to see the older campers guiding, teaching, encouraging and even gently correcting the younger campers.

The campers got along extremely well considering they came from different areas and many were unchurched friends who came with their churched buddies. The top four activities at camp (determined by a survey of the campers) in order of popularity were dance, volleyball, praise and worship, and hiking.

On the last day we had one activity open for the campers to choose from, and they chose a third dance class. That evening we had a banquet and dance for the campers and staff.

One of the more challenging activities was hiking the 1.4 mile trail up to Devil’s Head fire lookout station at an elevation of 9,748 feet. The views and scenery were breathtaking.

As for the spiritual side of camp, we witnessed the winning, building and equipping of disciples all happen at camp. To watch the changes happening in the campers (and staff) from day one to the last good-bye filled our hearts with joy.

Greg Williams, camp chaplain, ministered to the campers and staff; and CPR was his method: cultivating a relationship, planting the gospel message and reaping a harvest of believers.

Staff included Sarah Miles and Joe and Katrina Weber. They and their fellow staff members have a wonderful love for God and for the campers. They along with those who prayed for and gave financial support to SEP Colorado were a blessing and a big part of the success of this year’s camp.

Next year SEP Colorado will be two days longer, from July 18 to July 25.
