Christmas in Big Sandy

BIG SANDY, Texas—For the second year the Big Sandy congregation organized a communitywide Christmas walk between the churches of the city, Dec. 22.

The streets between the participating churches were lighted as citizens joyfully moved as a group between the churches. Each church presented a short service of music or readings regarding the birth of Christ.

Beginning at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in the black community, we then moved to First Christian Church, then to First United Methodist Church, the First Baptist Church, Solid Rock Christian Fellowship, and then to our building, where Rick Peterson presented a well-received program. We were hosts for the fellowship part of the program with refreshments for all.

The attendance was larger than last year, and the mayor and city council were represented.

Candlelight Christmas eve service

The lighting of the Christ candle was part of a Christmas eve service at New Beginnings in Big Sandy.  As the Advent candle representing Christ was lit, Jane Parsons, wife of the pastor, then turned and lit the candles held by Jerome and Helen Ellard. They then began to light other candles, and those families then lit others.

The song “Go Light Your World” was played as the light of Christ spread throughout the room. The darkness of the room soon became a room filled with light as all of the candles of the congregation were lit. At the conclusion of the service we had communion. Several visitors joined with us in this community celebration.

Christmas parade

The annual Christmas parade, Dec. 13, had more than 40 floats. Most of the floats were Christ oriented.

Rick Peterson created an awesome float titled, Unto Us a Child Is Born. It had many of the names of Christ around it, such as Messiah, Emmanuel and King of Kings. It was covered with lights and had a large screen showing a PowerPoint presentation.

As the parade ended, our float was parked in the downtown area so the citizens could enjoy the video and music presentation. The citizens then gathered for prayer as they held hands in unity. Mayor Linda Childress asked Pastor Sonny Parsons to pray for the city and the season and the unity of the community.
