Cult expert defends church

By Jon E. Pearkins

EDMONTON, Alberta--During a series of lectures on cults presented by Ron Carlson of Christian Ministries International of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, March 17-20, Dr. Carlson commented positively about the church and its doctrinal changes.

In the past Dr. Carlson has spoken quite negatively about the church, and his tapes have been widely circulated.

More than 1,000 people attended the series at Beulah Alliance Church. Bill Davies, a local church elder in the Edmonton North church, was there.

"The theme was that people in the cults are in the dark and we should, out of love for them, try and preach Christ to them," Mr. Davies said.

After the March 19 lecture Lawrence Broski, a member of the Edmonton South church, and Mr. Davies talked with Dr. Carlson.

Mr. Davies said that they were with the Worldwide Church of God and asked him what he thought about the church's changes. "He said he had heard that we adopted the trinity and a number of other doctrines and that the leadership was going to stay that course of coming back more into the popular or orthodox Christianity and God bless them."

The next night someone in the audience asked, "What do you think of the Worldwide Church of God?"

"Dr. Carlson said basically the same thing he had said to us the night before," Mr. Davies said.
