Donations by church members to help alleviate a famine in Ukraine have been so effective that further donations are not needed.
AU graduates who had participated in AU projects in Ukraine had kept in contact with people there and were aware of their needs. Several months ago they discussed the famine situation with Gerald Schnarrenberger of Church Administration.
Mr. Schnarrenberger called several regional pastors and asked if their congregations would like to send food.
As of Jan. 18, $4,269.50 had been collected. The money paid for more than four and a half tons of food, including shipping costs, and will provide more than 144,000 servings.
The Internat school director distributed food to poor and single or no-parent families. The bulk of the food will be given out the same way through schools and churches of all faiths within the city of Khust.
The church sent $2,000 to the regional Sabbatarian minister to distribute among their church communities for food, coal, medical and other such needs.
Joe Costantino named radio producer
Joe Costantino was named producer of the church's new radio program, which will begin airing in the fall. Joe was previously a senior producer in the church's Television Department. He has experience as a radio announcer and has worked as a radio station account executive in Chicago and Santa Barbara, California.
Joe and Larry Omasta, manager of Electronic Media, attended the National Religious Broadcasters convention Feb. 3 to 6 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to make contacts with other Christian radio producers and managers of stations that may air the program.
Joe and his wife, Paula, attend the Pasadena church where Joe is a deacon.
The church received a Grand Award in the Office or Industrial Park category from the Professional Grounds Management Society, Nov. 14. The award was presented to Rick van Pelt, Facilities director, and Ronald Grassmann, Landscape Department manager, at an awards banquet in Fort Worth, Texas.
Each year the society presents Grounds Maintenance awards to the corporations that best show outstanding grounds management. (The church received Grounds Maintenance awards in 1974, 1975 and 1980.)
Specific recognition was given for greatly reducing personnel and costs while maintaining and improving the grounds. This involved reengineering the entire operation by implementing cross-functional teams and outsourcing various maintenance elements.
