Famine stalks school

Sixteen students from the ninth grade Bible class at Imperial Schools participated in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine Feb. 23 and 24. They joined more than 200,000 other students across the United States who fasted on liquids and raised money to help draw attention to world hunger.

Three class members were quoted in a Feb. 22 Pasadena Star- News article titled "Taking the `Fast' Track in Famine Fight."

Hector Amaya, 14, said: "They're starving out there, so going without food for 30 hours isn't that bad."

After the famine Richelle Kennebeck said she learned how so many eating patterns in North America are tied to "fun eating." "I get bored and I go to the vending machine."

The class learned about the famine from an ad in Youth '96. Area establishments donated juice for the teens. Excess supplies were turned over to a food bank. Neil Earle.
