AU wins 1996 sportsmanship award

Ambassador won the Big State Conference Sportsmanship Award, according to conference commissioner Tony Stigliano.

Each of the seven schools in the conference voted for the most sportsmanlike men's and women's teams in the conference.

Ambassador alumni meet in Pasadena

On Saturday, May 4, Ambassador alumni from Southern California gathered in Pasadena for a regional alumni activity.

Russell Duke, AU president, his wife, Phyllis, and Tom Delamater, director of Institutional Advancement, attended the event.

This reunion was part of a series of activities that the alumni association will sponsor in the coming year.

Dr. Duke gave the sermon at Worldwide Church of God services in Pasadena, then conducted a meeting for prospective AU students.

Saturday evening about 100 people attended an alumni seminar where Dr. Duke spoke about news and plans for AU and fielded questions from the audience.

The next regional activity is scheduled for June 22 and 23 in New York.

AU publications win press awards

Two Ambassador publications combined to win 27 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association in Abilene, March 30.

Competing against universities with much larger enrollments, the Portfolio, the weekly student-run newspaper, placed first in its division in the following categories: critical review, computer-generated infographics, illustration and broadsheet sports page design.

The Envoy, the university yearbook, placed first in cover design, sports action photo, color feature photo, student life section and copywriting. The Envoy placed third overall in its division.

AU gets 34 Pentium computers from IBM

AU received 34 Pentium computers worth more than $85,000 from IBM through a gift-matching program.

According to Neil Matkin, chair of the Computer Information Systems Department, the new equipment will be put in computer labs to help ease students' increasing computer needs. They will also support students studying computer information systems and management information systems.

Track teams win Big State conference

In the first year of the conference, the AU men's and women's track teams captured conference championships April 25 to go along with their cross country championships won in the fall.

In the championship meet, senior Mark Friesen and sophomore Allan Kiuna led the Royals. Friesen won the javelin and discus, and Kiuna won the 1500 meters (3:57.69) and broke his own school record in the 800 with a time of 1:54.4.

For the Lady Royals, senior Kim Fricke and junior Kristy Arner combined to win six events. Both were on the 4 x 400 relay team. Fricke won the 100-meter high hurdles (15.25) and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:04.89). Arner took first in the 1500 (5:08.23) and the 800 (2:30.32).

Allan Kiuna, a sophomore from Kenya, was featured during the April 16-17 sports broadcasts by KLTV Channel 7, an ABC affiliate in Tyler.

Also interviewed were David Goethals, track coach; Rick Sherrod, cross country coach; and two of Kiuna's teammates, Aaron Bennis and Jeremy Ramsey.

Kim Fricke, a senior from Vancouver, Washington, was featured in the April 24, Sports Day section of the Dallas Morning News. Fricke, a 5'7" outside hitter, led the Lady Royals Volleyball team this year and was named NAIA Division I All-American.

IA awards ceremony

The Intercollegiate Athletes awards ceremony was conducted April 21. Each team was recognized for its achievements, with the following athletes awarded individual plaques for most valuable player: men's volleyball, Richard Lewellen, Palmdale, California; men's soccer, Mesen Dube, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe; cheerleading, Willie Bazeley, Picton, Ontario; women's track, Kim Fricke, Vancouver, Washington; women's tennis, Linda Aguilar, San Antonio, Texas; women's cross country, Kristy Arner, Big Sandy; men's cross country and men's track, Allan Kiuna, El Paso, Texas; men's golf, Scott McCrady, Coppell, Texas; men's basketball, Ben Manek, Harrah, Oklahoma; and women's basketball, Sharie Sawyer, Sewell, New Jersey.

Scholarship awarded

Americans for Cultural Excellence (ACE) awarded Kurt Zimmerman, a junior from Bushwood, Maryland, the Sarah F. Parker Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Psychology. Richard D. Hill, ACE president, presented a plaque and a check to Zimmerman in an April 23 ceremony.
