Imperial students win trip to Singapore

Imperial students (from left) Chris Dick, teacher Jim Petty, Darren Hanway, Scott Hulme and Betty Picinic won a nine-day all-expenses paid trip to Singapore in a geography competition April 18 sponsored by the Los Angeles Times.

The Imperial team tied for first place with a perfect score of 60.

More than 600 schools entered the Ambassadors to Singapore Competition. All contestants worked in teams of three or four studying the Los Angeles Times and other material provided by the Times to prepare for the competition. Each team submitted a four-page essay "Exploring, Comparing and Contrasting the Global Issues of Greatest Political, Social and Economic Importance to the Youths of Singapore and the United States as They Become Adults."

Based on their performance on the written essay, 10 teams were chosen to compete at the final competition.

The five winning teams from the oral competition and their sponsoring teachers left for Singapore May 10.

Gene Hogberg, former world news editor, assisted the Imperial team in preparation for the contest.
