Bulgarian violinist Margaret Nikol described her escape from communist oppression and performed several numbers at Ambassador Oct. 31.
Nikol, who described herself as a musicianary, told of her persecution at the hands of Bulgarian communists as she fought to survive what she termed the Christian holocaust.
Nikol performed several selections including a medley of patriotic hymns. Nikol now devotes her life to assisting Christians who live in former communist countries. She serves as president of International Impact Inc., a nondenominational Christian ministry.
Alan Roberts, manager of Ambassador's Architectural Services Department, was elected president of the Northeast Texas chapter of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA).
Four $500 Pepsi scholarships will be awarded to Ambassador students. The scholarships will be based on all-around university involvement, including service, sports and social activities. The scholarships will be awarded in December.
Joseph Austin, Thomas Upton and Neil Matkin of the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department attended the 1996 Annual Conference for the Association for Computer Educators in Texas (ACET), Oct. 3-5.
Dr. Austin presented a paper titled "Cooperative Learning Strategies in College-Level Computing Classes." Neil Matkin, department chair, was elected to the board of directors for the association.
Freshman forward Henrik Madsen was named National Player of the Week by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
The Brons, Denmark, native scored six goals to set a Big State Conference single season scoring mark in the Royals' final regular season game in an 8 to 3 win over Jarvis Christian College.
Madsen, who was also named conference and regional player of the week, led Ambassador to a 2-1 week and a spot in the NAIA southeast region playoffs. For the week, he scored nine goals on 14 attempts and had one assist.
Madsen went into the game against Jarvis with 28 goals, needing six to break the existing record of 33. His record-breaking 34th goal came at the 54 minute mark. Madsen also shattered Ambassador's old single season scoring mark of 19.
In the NAIA Division I playoffs the Royals (11-6-1) traveled to Gulfport, Mississippi, Nov. 8, and were defeated 5-0 by the No. 1 ranked team, William Carey (15-1).
Freshman stopper and team captain Charles Hricisak was named Big State Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week.
The Midland High School recruit from Presov, Slovakia, had two goals on two attempts as Ambassador improved its conference record (4-2) with a 3-1 win over Wiley College Oct. 27.
The Lady Royals volleyball team finished the regular season with a Big State Conference record of 9-1, good enough to earn co-champion status and No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs.
The No. 1 seed for the tournament was given to Ambassador, who won four of seven games played in two matches against Huston-Tillotson.
The Lady Royals defeated Huston-Tillotson Nov. 9 in the Ambassador field house to win their first Big State Conference tournament.
For the second time this year, Rhonda Richardson, a sophomore from Missouri City, Texas, has earned Big State Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week honors for the week ending Oct. 27.
The 5'8" middle blocker, helped the Lady Royals remain unbeaten in conference play with wins over Wiley and Jarvis Christian.
Richardson had 21 kills on 56 attempts with just four errors in 11 games, while adding six blocks and six service aces.
On the defensive end, Richardson came up with 29 digs and had just one service-receive error in 25 attempts.
Allan Kiuna, a sophomore from Kenya, finished 14th in the regional cross country championships in Irving, Texas, Nov. 1.
Kiuna's time of 28:11 for the 8K race qualified him to compete in the National Cross Country Championships Nov. 16 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
This marks the third consecutive year that Kiuna has qualified for the national championships.
After 28 years as a private course, Ambassador's 57-acre golf course opened to the public in November, according to President Russell Duke.
The course and its maintenance equipment is being leased to the newly-formed Ambassador Hills Golf Club.
The par 70 course is about 5,500-yards long and has nine holes and 18 tees.
The course includes a driving range, putting and chipping green, pro shop, a business retreat center and 18 gas-powered carts.
The course was designed and built by Longview businessman Bill Brewer, whose son, Wayne, is the vice president of operations for Ambassador Hills.
