MONROVIA, California--"What better way to solve problems is there than prayer, and what better cause is there than our children," said Tina Hanson, a Pasadena member.
Tina joined Moms in Touch, a prayer group that meets for one hour every Monday to pray for the students, teachers and staff of Plymouth Elementary School in Monrovia.
The Plymouth group is one of more than 30,000 Moms in Touch prayer groups across the country and around the world. Moms in Touch was founded in Abbotsford, British Columbia, 12 years ago by Fern Nichols, when her children entered junior high school.
Mrs. Nichols wrote: "My heart cried out to the Lord asking him to protect them, and enable them to see clearly the difference between right and wrong, and to make good decisions."
Mrs. Nichols listed the purposes of Moms in Touch in the handbook the organization distributes:
* To stand in the gap for our children through prayer.
* To pray that our children will receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, then stand boldly in their faith.
* To pray for teachers and staff.
* To pray that teachers, administrative staff and students would come to faith in Jesus Christ.
* To provide support and encouragement to moms who carry heavy burdens for their children.
* To pray that our schools may be directed by biblical values and high moral standards.
* To be an encouragement and a positive support to our schools.
Others in the Plymouth group are the facilitator, Julie Grant, a member of Village Covenant Church; and Pam Martin, a member of Cornerstone Bible Church. Each of the women have children at Plymouth School.
As a Christian, Tina was concerned when her daughter, Elizabeth, entered kindergarten. "I found out about Moms in Touch from a radio program and was pleasantly surprised that a group had been functioning at Plymouth School for years.
"Other members may learn that a Moms in Touch is already functioning in their children's schools too."
When asked the benefits of praying for the school each week, Mrs. Grant replied: "We've seen a lot of the staff be bolder in their walk with Christ, and we've seen a different attitude about life in general at the school. The teachers appreciate us praying for them week after week."
