Vacation Bible school brings children to Jesus

By Frank Parsons

SAN ANTONIO, Texas--The San Antonio church completed one of the most encouraging and spiritually uplifting activities we have ever enjoyed.

During the week of July 7 to 12 we conducted a five-day vacation Bible school program. According to our Women's Ministry Bulletin: "This super event truly brought Jesus to the children as alive in history and alive today, as One to be studied, praised, emulated and worshiped."

The congregation provided money, supplies, decorations and workers. I had no idea how much participation we would have, because members are scattered around town. After prayer and letting God help us choose an excellent director and staff, things went far beyond our expectations.

Consuelo Orduno with her assistants Lucy Villareal and Lourdes Rivas put together a staff of men, women and teens that bonded together in producing an excellent event.

The first training session had more than 40 in attendance. At registration, Monday, July 7, we were surprised as more than 50 children, teens and adults showed up.

Ten to 15 of those in attendance were children from outside our church. If we had advertised we would probably have been swamped with children.

We used the Group material "Wild Frontier Theme Park" featuring Jesus as the main attraction. Every class, game, snack, song and skit focused on a daily theme about Christ.

It was inspiring to see the children pray, sing, read scripture and openly express themselves in a joyous way about Jesus Christ. Teens enjoyed themselves as much as the younger children, and set fine examples for the younger ones to follow. Adults who had not served in activities before displayed gifts that helped the program to be a big success.

We videotaped the week's program as it progressed and showed it in church along with a presentation of graduation certificates and individually framed pictures of each child in attendance.

Pedro Orduno made an invitation that was sent to each child's parent. Our attendance that day was the largest we had had in several months. The children are enthusiastic about Jesus Christ now.

Consuelo Orduno, our director, said that as a child she always wanted to attend a vacation Bible school, but she couldn't. She had always wanted her children to participate in one, and now they could.
