SEP to return to Orr, Minnesota, in 1998

By Jeb Egbert

BIG SANDY--The Summer Educational Program (SEP) will return to Orr, Minnesota, in 1998.

The one-session program will run from Tuesday, July 14, through Thursday, July 30. Campers who are accepted should plan to arrive July 13 and leave July 31.

Tuition is $545 per camper. In an effort to minimize transportation expenses, we are considering whether chartered buses can be used from around the United States. If so, transportation costs could be reduced as much as 75 percent.

While the main beneficiaries of SEP will continue to be WCG teens, we hope that many will ask their friends to apply.

Camper positions are available to those ages 13 to 18. SEP is first and foremost a Christian camp dedicated to helping young men and women come to Christ.

Our intent is to once again establish the wilderness canoeing program in the boundary waters of northern Minnesota as one of the hallmarks of the program. We anticipate an outstanding Christian living class taught by a youth pastor.

As always, the lineup of activities SEP is known for will be offered: basketball, volleyball, dance, all-terrain biking, television, radio, softball, windsurfing, sailing, riflery, archery, swimming and water polo.

We also plan to transfer to Orr the challenge course established in Big Sandy last year. This involves team-building activities as well as a ropes course.

We will once again have our traditional block party to kick off the camp the first night after orientation. In addition we will have the things that truly make SEP a life-changing experience: dances, chapels, praise and worship assemblies, a music night, cookouts and fellowship time.

This is the first year we will not have the benefit of Ambassador students to staff SEP, so we will need to recruit staff from all around the North American region (including the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean).

Those who apply and are accepted for the canoeing staff need to arrive July 5, while the rest of the staff (including post-college, college and high school workers) need to arrive July 8.

High school volunteers should plan to leave Orr July 31, and the remainder of the staff should plan to leave Aug. 5.

We need qualified staff not only in the activity departments already outlined, but in the many service areas of the camp including food service, transportation, custodial, maintenance, health center, grounds maintenance and the office.

Those who can volunteer for these positions are welcome to apply and may receive special consideration. Those accepted as volunteers can expect to receive free room and board for the duration of their stay at SEP.

Applications for campers and staff are available. Applications for campers will be accepted until May 29. Applications for staff positions must be received by May 1. Those who submit their completed applications early have a better chance for selection.

It is our goal to have a minimum of 240 campers, six girls dorms and six boys dorms.

Thousands have participated in SEP over the 32 years of operation in Orr. We look forward to many more applying to be part of the SEP family in 1998.
