Northwest members join in fast

SPOKANE, Washington--Inland Northwest churches are participating in a 40-day fast this spring.

The idea for the fast, launched by Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ, is for Christians to humble themselves in repentance and reconciliation so God can restore, refresh and empower the people of God.

"I believe it is going to help draw people together," said Glen Weber, pastor of the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Spokane churches.

"People seemed fairly eager to sign up, and I am focusing my sermons on building stronger relationships with Jesus Christ."

Congregations are being asked to cover the 40 days to make sure someone is fasting each day. Many members are taking one day a week for the full 40 days.

A few years ago Mr. Bright went on a 40-day fast and felt moved by God to call America to fast. He and others felt moved to ask two million people to do a 40-day fast by the turn of the century. They hope to have 100,000 participate this spring.

Cominos return to Australia

SYDNEY, Australia-- John Comino, former regional pastor of the Washington, D.C., region, returned home to Australia in January with his wife, Chris, to be near his ailing mother.

John will serve as a local church elder in the Sydney North church. Financial cutbacks precluded him from being hired into the Australian ministry.

Jay Goldby elected to Poway city council

POWAY, California--Jay Goldby, a local church elder in the San Diego North County church, was inducted into the Poway city council Dec. 3.

Jay was elected to the city council of this community of 47,000 Nov. 5.

Jay related how he came to run for the city council.

About three years ago he purchased the assets of a small nonoperating sign company. He was asked to assist on a Chamber of Commerce sign ordinance committee, and afterward was asked to participate on a Chamber of Commerce publications committee.

Jay held several chamber positions, eventually being elected president.

"Soon after that I was asked to run for city council, and as I had done previously, I counseled, prayed and meditated, and agreed. My wife, Margie, thought it would be a good thing."

Jay continued: "I have learned since coming into the church that whenever I was asked to do something, even if I knew I wasn't qualified, or interested, that God was giving me a chance to serve, and since my reason for being a son of God is to serve others, who am I to decline?"

"What is so remarkable about all of this," Jay said, "is that this was not a desire of mine. I did not politic, manipulate, scheme, deceive or strive for this. All I did was try to follow God's word, and Mr. Tkach Sr.'s admonition to get involved."
