Members safe after tornados hit Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas--No members were hurt and most had little damage to their homes and property when tornados struck in early March, according to pastor Allen Bullock.

The church supplied food and used clothing to those in need. "We thank God for his protection of the members and for their willingness to help others not so fortunate," Mr. Bullock said.

Singles event

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota--Minneapolis-St. Paul singles invite singles to their Friendshipfest weekend July 3-6.

The theme is Single People Actuating Real Kindness (SPARK).

Activities will include a barbecue followed by fireworks, a dinner dance, a trip to the Mall of America, Bible studies and seminars.

The cost for the weekend will be $105, which includes a hotel room and most meals. Registration deadline is June 13.

A church is born

AZLE, Texas--Thirty-four members of the Azle satellite church met for the first time Feb. 1 in the clubhouse at Heritage RV Park, five miles south of downtown Azle.

The church is pastored by Vince Szymkowiak, who also pastors the Fort Worth church. Anita Springer.

Youths honored

CHICO, California--Andrea Metcalf, a member here, was admitted into the Golden Key National Honor Society Nov. 17.

Andrea received a certificate during a reception for new members at California State University, Chico, where she is a junior majoring in accounting. The Society honors the top 15 percent of juniors and seniors at colleges and universities across the nation.

Andrea and her husband, Rick, have two children, Tyler and Alexandra. Gary and Norma Avey.

ARIMA, Trinidad--Marsha Lynch, 16, of the Arima church was honored at an awards function sponsored by the Ministry of Education.

Marsha placed second in Trinidad & Tobago in the 1996 Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examinations. Victor Simpson.

Bob Knowles runs against leukemia

HONOLULU--Bob Knowles of the San Diego, California, North County church participated in the Honolulu Marathon Dec. 8

Bob raised $3,800 for the Leukemia Society of America by running for special teammate Katherine Sanders.

Katherine, 8, has had leukemia since she was 2. At one point she had chemotherapy for 102 straight weeks.

Two years ago she told her mom, enough is enough! Jesus will heal me. She has been in remission for these two years.

Celebration and training in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados--Services here Jan. 25 marked the beginning of a weekend seminar for lay leaders in the southern Caribbean.

The sermon was delivered by Charles Fleming, regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

On Sunday lay leaders from Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana and St. Vincent together with the pastors and wives from Barbados, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago conducted an interactive seminar at the home of Clifton and Pearl Charles.

The morning session was devoted to discussing servant leadership and the afternoon session, Spirit-led planning.

Pastors and wives attended a session on Monday. They discussed plans to develop a Caribbean magazine and a Caribbean newspaper.

Paul Krautmann, pastor in St. Lucia, and Mr. Fleming, made radio programs to be aired on the Barbados Radio Station Faith FM. Clifton Charles.

Member honored for volunteer efforts

CALGARY, Alberta--Victor Hornbacher received the Canada Volunteer Certificate of Merit Oct. 20 from the Canadian government.

The Minister of Health recognized Victor's contributions toward improving the health and social well-being of the citizens of Calgary. Gerry Brummelhuis.

Laura Woodall receives Community Hero Award

RED BLUFF, California--Laura Woodall was recognized by Red Bluff in mid November for her service as a foster mother to babies with extreme medical problems.

Laura, who was nominated by two members of the community, Judi Garner Richins and Pam Wheeler, was presented the award by Kathe Trueblood, a staff writer for the Daily News.

Over the past 10 years Laura has been a foster mom to 75 children.

"Becoming a foster parent has definitely been a benefit to my life," says the single mother of five, including one girl she adopted.

Laura explained in the Nov. 14 Daily News/Times-Sentinel of Red Bluff: "It's been rewarding, from watching the kids smile to successful reunifications with their families to helping them overcome their disabilities. Letting the kids go is hard emotionally, but watching the kids thrive and giving them a good solid foundation to start their lives is worth it."

Said nominator Pam Wheeler: "Laura is definitely a heroine to many children."

Judi Garner Richins added: "Laura is a marvelous person, a silent heroine."

Small groups formed in Lincoln, Nebraska

LINCOLN, Nebraska--Last June the Lincoln church changed from having services every week to twice a month. The other weeks members enjoy sharing fellowship, Bible study and prayer in four small groups.

Each group is growing in understanding, and they are growing closer to God and to each other as they share and pray together. Duane Marquis.

Cecil Williams receives award for excellence

JACKSONVILLE, Florida--Cecil Williams was one of 17 managers in AT&T's southern region to receive the AT&T President's Award for Excellence Nov 15.

More than 8,000 managers were eligible. Cecil and his wife, Juliett, are members of the Jacksonville, Florida, congregation. Bill Powell.

Little Rock women retreat to Hot Springs

HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas--More than 20 women took the weekend off and attended services with Hot Springs brethren Jan. 18 and 19.

During a potluck afterward the women heard speeches from Charlene Wawak, Doris Bullock and Nancy Griffin. Later they met for prayer and discussion. Nola Ballinger coordinated the event. Julia Perdue.
