Pastor General Joseph Tkach, in cooperation with Questar Publishers of Sisters, Oregon, is writing a book about the church's transformation tentatively titled Transformed by Truth.
Over the past year several publishers had encouraged Mr. Tkach and other church officials to write such a book. Following prayer, discussion and counsel the Worldwide Church of God signed a contract to publish the story of the church's journey from the perspective of the pastor general.
"Of course, my journey is not exactly the same journey as that of each of our members," Mr. Tkach said. "As we have researched and prepared this material, I have tried to ensure that those who read this book will understand that members of the church have had many experiences."
The church signed the contract with Questar after negotiations narrowed the choice to Questar and one other publisher. The contract states that Mr. Tkach will not personally profit from book sales. The church board of directors decided that profits from the book will help underwrite the costs of print, postage and publishing that PTM faces.
PTM will offer Transformed by Truth to church members, readers and a wider group of former readers at a discount to the bookstore price.
Questar will distribute Transformed by Truth to a variety of Christian and secular outlets, as well as provide print and electronic publicity announcing its sale. Mr. Tkach, along with other church officials, expect to be interviewed about the book after its release.
"We know of at least one other book that is in the process of being written about this historic transformation," said Mr. Albrecht, PTM executive director. "In fact, we will not be surprised to see a number of books and scholarly dissertations over the next few years. That is yet another reason for Mr. Tkach to tell the story of his own personal journey."
Questar hopes to release the book by the end of July, with sales in bookstores beginning in August. When it is released, The Worldwide News will publish a coupon that readers may use to order the book.
