Des Moines women's retreat: Building relationships upward, inward and outward

DES MOINES, Iowa--Building Relationships was the theme of a women's retreat attended by 137 women here April 11 to 13.

Nancy Lehmkuhl, Des Moines Women's Ministry coordinator, welcomed the guests, commenting that we are all in different seasons of our lives; some still in the dark, gray times of winter, needing healing and strength; others moving toward and into spring.

Guest speakers were Tammy Tkach, Women's Ministry Support coordinator, who spoke on Do You Know Who You Are? and Following to Lead; and Sheila Graham, editor of Christian Women in Touch, who spoke on What Women's Ministry Is and Is Not.

Linda Dyer, a pastor's wife from Columbia, Missouri, spoke on the Dynamics of Growth and Change. Guest speaker and author Sharon Hoffman, from Des Moines, captivated the audience with her talk Dream Forever Dreams. Her book, Untie the Ribbons was available for purchase.

Roundtable discussions covered topics such as parenting in the '90s, worship music, journaling, prayer, stress, abuse and families in crisis, care groups, menopause, fund-raisers and outreach programs.

Ten workshops were presented. Topics, presenters and areas of residence were 1) Virtuous Woman: to be Politically Correct or Spiritually Correct, Paula Schuler, Big Sandy; Martha, Mary and Me, Michele Urmie, Davenport, Iowa; 3) Discover Your God-Given Gifts, Passion and Personal Style, Nancy Lehmkuhl, Ankeny, Iowa; 4) Intercessory Prayer, Linda Dyer, Columbia, Missouri; 5) Gaining Through Losing, Ruth O'Connor, Altoona, Iowa.

6) Lay Counseling, Sheila Graham, Pasadena; 7) Taking on the Identity of Christ, Carol Meyer, Kansas City, Missouri; 8) Outreach Project: Ugly Quilts, Fran Wahman, Des Moines; 9) Rolling Stones, Geneva Barness, Des Moines; 10) Laughter, God's Healing Touch, Becky Campbell, Atlantic, Iowa.

Praise and worship music was interspersed with solos, skits and scripture readings by women from Des Moines; Omaha, Nebraska; McComb, Rockford and Peoria, Illinois; and Brainerd, Lake City and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
