Eight community churches participated in the evening event at the Blackfoot Civic Auditorium. The American Legion presented the colors and led the audience in the pledge of allegiance.
Connie Martin, a WCG member, organized a presentation on the National Day of Prayer as an American tradition. Three WCG teens, Justine Shafer, Ryan Martin and Byron Zick, recited historical quotes by American leaders about prayer, as did Rob Rittenberg, who also served as the song leader.
We read a proclamation issued by Mayor Scott Reese. David Thompson, pastor of the Methodist church, gave a message about prayer.
The observance was filled with congregational singing, scripture readings, special music and prayer.
As a finale, Native Americans Lizzie Dixey and Ardella Buckskin dramatized a musical solo of the Lord's Prayer with sign language. It was an encouraging and inspiring evening as the Blackfoot community focused on the theme In God We Trust.
In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, member John Keen reported that the Harrisburg WCG congregation teamed up with the Penbrook United Church of Christ to cosponsor a National Day of Prayer Praise and Worship Service.
About 110 people filled the sanctuary of the Penbrook United Church of Christ.
Tom Pickett, WCG pastor, opened the service with prayer. Mayor Stottlemyer from the Borough of Penbrook thanked us for inviting him and the borough council to the service.
The mayor then introduced the four council members in attendance. After the introductions, he introduced the council president, Ruth Brown, who mentioned the responsibility she felt trying to be a conscientious Christian, as well as a civic leader.
She concluded with the comment that she sometimes had to make tough decisions, but always had to go with her conscience because she had to live with herself at the end of the day.
Robert Stoudt, pastor of the Penbrook United Church of Christ, concluded in prayer.
In Pasadena Mr. Tkach and several church officials attended the annual mayor's prayer breakfast.
Chairman David Hornberger said that if an award was given for reconciliation it would be given to Joseph Tkach and the Worldwide Church of God. Mr. Hornberger asked Mr. Tkach to stand.
That evening the church conducted a prayer service in the Auditorium. The featured speaker was John R. Holland, president of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. Mr. Tkach also briefly addressed the group.
An offering was taken up to benefit Friendship Baptist church, which is being retrofitted to guard against earthquakes. In the meantime the congregation is meeting on WCG property in the old Imperial Schools gym.
