Chicago area churches conduct racial reconciliation workshops

By Shenekia Scoggins

CHICAGO, Illinois--WCG pastors from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin sponsored a reconciliation workshop with an emphasis on racial reconciliation at the Joliet Job Corp Center Aug. 23 and 24.

Workshops were conducted by Cherry Steinwender, co-director of the Center for the Healing of Racism, and Chris Beam, pastor of the Houston, Texas, North church.

Mrs. Steinwender and Mr. Beam addressed the subjects of racism and prejudice, denial and stereotypes, diversity, institutionalized and cultural racism, oneness of humanity and ally building.

A panel of members shared how they were affected by racism and how they dealt with it.

Worship services continued the theme of racism with sermons by Mr. May and Mr. Albrecht.

Jenny Gastaldi of Elkhart, Indiana, said that the event was eye-opening. "I have become aware of my own unaware racism," she said.

Charese Eggleston said: "I'm glad the church is recognizing the problem of racism and taking steps to overcome it."
