Washington members help food bank

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Twenty-three members sorted and packed nearly 5,000 pounds of food for the Capital Area Community Food Bank (CACFB) June 29. CACFB distributes food to the needy in the D.C. area.

CACFB distributes food and nonperishable items to homeless shelters, food banks and churches that serve more than 330,000 needy people in the area.

The church's effort was spearheaded by Maurice Settles, a deacon in the D.C. church. The Washington church plans to work with CACFB once a month. Deborah A. Dessaso.

San Antonio churches have gifts seminars

SAN ANTONO, Texas--The San Antonio churches participated in spiritual gifts seminars presented by a deaconess from the Jackson, Mississippi, church, Charlotte Ann Lieb, M.Ed., M.CC (masters in Community Counseling), July 19 and 26.

She has presented gifts seminars in Atlanta, Georgia, and Jackson, Greenwood and Natchez, Mississippi. Frank Parsons.

Seven young people baptized in Chicago

CHICAGO, Illinois--Seven young people were baptized at the home of Dan and Joan Hoosen Aug. 10.

They are Erica, Marianne and Zeb Dean, Javiar Hernandez, Mike and Dan O'Malley and Karen Pirog.

Pastor James Newby and John Pirog performed the baptisms. The young people attend a youth ministry class taught by John Pirog and Vikki LaRocco. (see WN April 22)

Two teens baptized at beach event

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California--Two Pasadena teens, Gabriel Alaniz and Ruth Shafer, were baptized in the Pacific Ocean Aug. 3 at a beach event sponsored by the Antelope Valley congregation.

More than 150 teens and youth workers from Southern California congregations attended. Dozens of supporters gathered around the teens to witness the baptisms. Joanna Mitchell.

Glendora women revitalize relationships

ONTARIO, California--One hundred forty-seven women gathered at the Airport Hilton Hotel May 2-4 for a retreat sponsored by the Glendora church.

Women from 25 WCG congregations in California, Texas, New Jersey, Florida and Arizona met to worship, share, pray, sing and fellowship.

"Our theme was Revitalizing Relationships," said Jan Weiner, overall coordinator. "We offered workshop sessions on a variety of topics from improving your marriage relationships and learning to be closer to Jesus Christ to building business relationships."

Sixteen small group discussions took place Sunday morning with topics including grief, loss of a child, serious illness, racial reconcilation and families divided by religion.

Tammy Tkach gave two presentations. She also led the group in prayer for two women afflicted with cancer.

Diane Appleton of Long Beach, California, said: "The highlight of the weekend was the camaraderie I felt among the women as we all helped each other to look to Jesus Christ as our center."

Emma Brown of Tucson, Arizona, said the retreat helped her to see that "God does care for and love us and has an important role for each of us." Elisabeth Misner.

Justin Dunscombe first in his class

ESCONDIDO, California--Justin Dunscombe graduated first in his class of 381 at San Pasqual High School June 12.

Justin's grade point average was 4.52 throughout his four years of high school. He was a member of the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and for two consecutive years was recognized in Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Minister's wife is `driving force' to serve needy

WESTON, Florida--Ronda Stewart is "the force behind an unnamed Weston-based effort that provides clothing and furniture to thousands of needy South Florida families and individuals," according to the Sun-Sentinal.

Ronda told the Sun-Sentinel that "her Christian obligation to serve others is what drives her to lend a helping hand."

Ronda and her mother, Carole Dute, have delivered thousands of new or restored baby care items to the Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Residents bring items to a drop-off point, and Ronda collects, sorts and refurbishes the items for distribution.

Ronda and her husband, James, an elder, serve the Boca Raton, Florida, congregaton.

Kricia Close named All-American scholar

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, Florida--Kricia M. Close was named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.

Kricia attends the Panama City, Florida, congregation. She is the daughter of Scott and Linda Close.

A Heart of Hope women's conference

BELLEVUE, Washington--Join other Christian women Nov. 23 for a conference with the theme "Women of Light." Guest speakers and topics include Norva Kelly, on the importance of being there for someone; Shirley Buchanan, on negative self-talk; and Marion York, on positive communication that gets results.

This conference, sponsored by the Seattle, Bellevue and Everett Women's Club, is Sunday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Maydenbauer Center in Bellvue.

Megan Been makes all-tournament softball team

MOORE, Oklahoma--Megan Been was named to the 1997 10 and under all tournament team for the USSSA world softball tournament.

Team membership was based on batting averages at the 1997 world tournament in Marietta, Georgia. Megan batted .739 with six runs batted in. Her team placed second out of 32 teams.

Megan is the daughter of Quinton and Marene Been, and the granddaughter of Winford and Phyllis Vice.

Women make and donate items for hospital

ATHENS, Ohio--Each month women in the Parkersburg, West Virginia, and Chillicothe, Ohio, congregations make and donate stuffed bears and finger puppets to O'Bleness Hospital in Athens.

The project began in December 1994 after deaconess Melinda Miller heard about Care Wear, a nationwide volunteer organization of individuals and groups who make crocheted and knitted booties and hats and sewn gowns for premature babies, and stuffed flannel bears, finger puppets and other items for hospitals.

Mrs. Miller wrote to Care Wear and received a packet of patterns.

After making some samples she contacted the hospital and talked to the volunteer resources assistant director. She took the samples to various departments, and they determined what they could use.

Husband and wife achievers

NORFOLK, Virginia--Andrew Taylor was honored as the top performer for his division at NationsBank Corp. His wife, Gail, was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to India.

Chris Gordon named to Scholars Academy

NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Missouri--Chris Gordon of Ritenour High School was selected to attend the 1997 Missouri Scholars Academy at the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri June 8 to 28.

One goal of the academy is to help gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities to attain high standards of achievement.

David Foote swims 12.5 miles around Key West, Florida

KEY WEST, Florida--David Foote, a member in California, completed the 12.5 mile swim around Key West in 5 hours 11 minutes, June 7.
