Heart of a Woman conference

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida--About 280 women from Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean gathered at the Sunrise Hilton for the Heart of a Woman conference Feb. 28 to March 1. The event was organized by the South Florida Women's Ministries.

The theme was "Give Me an Undivided Heart That I May Fear Your Name" (Psalm 86:11).

The first session opened with welcoming remarks from Carmen Fleming, event organizer. Next was a praise and worship session led by Keisha Taylor and the South Florida praise team.

In the first presentation Tammy Tkach asked, "Do you know who you are?" She spoke about how Satan can cause us to focus on our flaws rather than on who God says we are--new creatures with our identity in Christ.

Later that day in another presentation, she encouraged us to picture ourselves as "dancing in the arms of God," responding to the lead of our invisible partner.

Sheila Graham encouraged us to listen when God speaks by the Holy Spirit through Bible study, prayer, circumstances and the church. She challenged us to pray for truth--for in that way we are tuning in to God's mind. Mrs. Graham also spoke on spiritual gifts, saying that God has gifted each of us, and she encouraged us to use these gifts to become "centers where Jesus can flow like rivers of living water into the lives of others."

Sunday, March 1, Pastor General Joseph Tkach, who was on a visit to the South Florida churches (see Updates, page 32), led an interactive session on prayer, and conducted a question and answer session.

The conference culminated in a communion service in which regional director Charles Fleming encouraged everyone to "dance to the rhythm of grace" even when it means that we have to make ourselves vulnerable to others.

"The refreshing winds of God's spirit were blowing here," Mrs. Fleming said. "We could not see him, nor touch him, but the effects of his presence were unmistakably felt--the joy, the peace and reconciliation."
