Pasadena teens serve in 30-Hour Famine

By Alyssa Akers

PASADENA--Did you know that every time you take a breath a child dies from a hunger-related disease? That's one child every three seconds or 35,000 a day.

Most of these deaths could be prevented with as little as a few dollars.

Our youth group, along with 600,000 other U.S. students, joined a worldwide effort to ease hunger by participating in World Vision's 30-Hour Famine Feb. 28 and 29.

World Vision is a Christian nonprofit relief organization that combats world hunger while providing literacy and Bible training, immunization and housing for people in need throughout the world.

They are hosts each year to the 30-Hour Famine in late February or early March.

Before the Famine each participant collects money from sponsors, which is used to support World Vision.

But it doesn't end there. During the Famine, they also must go without solid food so they can get a small taste of what many go through daily. The difference is that they are allowed clean and usually good tasting liquids, and they have a meal waiting for them at the end of the fast. The people they are helping don't.

Our group not only fasted, but we served at a World Vision clothing distribution warehouse in Los Angeles. Other groups joined us throughout the day, and about noon 200 people were there. While there we packaged clothes to be sent to Romania.
