Singles retreat:Single servants of God

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island--The Providence congregation invites singles to a Christian singles retreat, Single Servants of God, at a 300-acre Christian conference center in Exeter, Rhode Island, Sept. 4-6 (Labor Day weekend).

John Halford, European regional director, and his wife, Pat, will be special guests.

The event will include three days of worship, interactive discussions, fellowship and fun together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

The cost is $125, which includes overnight accommodations and all meals for the entire retreat.

Pensacola combines for service with Baptist congregation

PENSACOLA, Florida--The Pensacola congregation combined with the Ferry Pass Baptist Church for a worship service March 20.

The service was filled with songs of worship, special music and split sermons from John Young, WCG pastor, and Frank Johnson of the Ferry Pass Church.

Members from both congregations performed in a combined choir.

For the past year the Pensacola congregation has met at the Ferry Pass Baptist Church. Creasia Daniel.

 

 

Orlando church releases compact disc of original music

30-update.jpg (7155 bytes)CORLANDO, Florida--The Orlando congregation unveiled a full-length compact disc of original Christian music during services April 17.

The album, "Lifting Up Rocks" (A Christian Compilation) is a blend of pop, ambient and classical pieces written by songwriters who attend the Orlando congregation.

The CD was produced under the direction of Erick Pace to raise funds for ministries the Orlando congregation houses.

Amarillo host to interdenominational music service

AMARILLO, Texas--The Amarillo congregation was host for its seventh interdenominational music worship service March 6.

A potluck followed with everyone invited to stay and continue fellowshipping.

"This service was extra special because three guests expressed an interest in coming back to join us for our regular weekly service," said pastor Sammy O'Dell.

 

Buffalo South teens conduct worship service

BUFFALO, New York--The Buffalo South congregation had a youth worship service Jan. 2, with a theme Youth for Christ.

Stephanie Lasch and Mike McSparron were worship leaders, with the opening prayer given by Adam Buczek and the benediction by Sarah Knaack.

Special music was provided by an orchestral ensemble with Becky, Stephanie and Julia Lasch, Jonathan and Christina Holdsworth, and Andrea Ferguson.

Joan Fishburn directed the orchestra. Caleb Buczek read a scripture.

Teens who attended the youth evangelism conference Niagara 98, Walk the Narrow Road, gave testimonials on their relationship with Christ.

Julia Lasch led the congregation in prayer circles to strengthen their fellowship and families.

Garret Hussak shared a message from Reggie Dabbs, a motivational youth ministry speaker, who spoke of the only road to heaven--Jesus Christ.

Andrea Ferguson and Diane Solberg participated in an outreach project witnessing at the Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, New York, sharing the good news of Christ.

Kim Thompson shared an inspirational message Keep the Fire Burning, from speaker Ben Strong, a teen who witnessed the shooting at Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky.

Other teens performed behind the scenes services such as greeting, coffee and snacks, sound system (Matthew Knaack), and ushers (Jim McLellan and Derek Ferguson).

The closing message, One Kid at a Time, was given by Martin Koenig, who, with his wife, Beth, coordinates the teen ministry, calling on the congregation to make a difference in the lives of the youths.

Our teens are growing in their relationship with Christ, he said. We need to support them in the toughest times of their lives. Whether as a mentor, spending time with our children, by giving time to help with a youth project, everyone is part of youth ministry. Martin Koenig

Churches to mark anniversaries

AKRON, Ohio--The Akron and Canton, Ohio, congregations plan to celebrate their 40th and 20th anniversaries Aug. 14 and 15.

Services will be Aug. 14 at 2 pm. at FUMC, 954 Eastland Ave. in Akron. This will be followed by a dinner and dance at the Tangier Restaurant at 7 pm. The next day a picnic and potluck will take place at Earl Lake Park.

Church announces ministerial retirements
and terminations

PASADENA--The following have retired from the WCG ministry: George Affeldt, Guy Ames, Ed Faulk, Allen Olson and Warren Waian.

The following are no longer employed by the WCG: Ronald Felling Jr., Jay Fields, Steve Gore, Ron Jameson, Edward Kopec, Jeff Molnar, Owen Murphy, Stan Murphy, Glenn Nice, David Smith and Vince Szymkowiak.

All of the above are still elders in the WCG, and Mr. Ames and Mr. Faulk serve as bivocational pastors.

"We thank all these men and their wives for their years of service while in the employment of the WCG," said Dan Rogers, superintendent of ministers, "and we wish them God's blessing in their time of transition to other careers and new ministry opportunities."

Washington congregation celebrates Black History Month

SILVER SPRING, Maryland--The Washington, D.C., Metro congregation commemorated Black History Month Feb. 27 with a worship service, Caribbean dinner and youth fashion show.

Pastor Lloyd Garrett gave a sermon titled A Biblical Perspective of Black History. The service included poetry reading by several members, essays by two youths, an offering and plenty of stirring music.

The Caribbean dinner was prepared by several women. Decorations from various islands added to the event.

After dinner the youths presented a fashion show, directed by Yvonne Clarke-Matthew.

The youths presented formal, casual and business attire as well as beach-wear and biker or street-wear, in several skits.

Between the youth fashion segments, other skits, music and poetry were presented.

In island style, Jullian Moore told the story of Kutura's Strength, which relates the power of prayer and faith.

One segment presented by adults was titled African American Queens and portrayed traditional African fabrics and garments. Rose Monroe, 85, and Willie Robinson showed that you are never too old to have style. Participants ranged in age from 11 to 85. Deborah Amato.

Middletown preteens complete drug program

MIDDLETOWN, New York--The preteens in the Middletown congregation completed a month-long program on Just Say No to Drugs.

They were shown videos and were allowed to express their thoughts and give examples of how they would react if they were put in certain situations.

The program ended with the children signing certificates saying they wanted to stay drug free, with the congregation giving their support.

For the fourth year, the Middletown teens and preteens participated in World Vision's 30-Hour Famine. They raised $505.

Susan Mitchell, youth director, gave a presentation to the MIddletown congregation on the need to support the teens and preteens in the fast.

"Each year, the youths grow in perspective on how important it is to give of ourselves as followers of Jesus Christ," Mrs. Mitchell said.

The smaller children contributed by collecting food as a way of participating.

Duluth celebrates three-day resurrection retreat

DULUTH, Minnesota--The Duluth congregation combined with Crown Christian Family Church for a weekend retreat April 2 to 4.

Pastor Gordy Lindquist had met Bob Aspling, pastor of the Crown Christian Family Church, at a meeting of the Lake Superior Pastors Association, a group of ministers that meets once a month.

The retreat began with a Friday night praise and worship service conducted by Crown Christian's fellowship.

Saturday evening, the WCG shared its Lord's Supper service, which included foot washing, and then was host to a potluck.

Sunday morning, Crown Christian welcomed the WCG to its Resurrection Service.

Hawaii

The Festival in Hawaii will be at the Hilton Turtle Bay Golf & Tennis Resort on the north shore of Oahu.

Services will be conducted on most days, and also several workshops on subjects related to the faith will be available. The first service is Sept. 24, and the last service is Oct. 2.

Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska, will once again be an eight-day Festival this fall. Workshops will be conducted on evangelism, and how to help congregations.

Steve Holsinger, pastor of Parkside Church will speak. He helped his congregation grow from a few hundred to more than 900 people in a few years.

Two services will be dedicated to evangelistic outreach. One will be mostly conducted by teens, led by pastor Brian Gray.

Seaside, Oregon, men's choir

The Seaside Feast will have a men's choir, "Men Singing Praise."

One hundred men are asked to sign up. The choir will also seek instrumental back-up including acoustic and bass guitar, piano, electronic keyboard and percussion.
