Ten years ago the fledgling women's ministry in Zimbabwe hosted their first women's retreat. Women from Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe attended, along with Sheila Graham, Shirley Henderson and myself. Every year since then, the women's ministries in these three countries have taken turns hosting this much-anticipated, encouraging and inspiring event.

The political and economic situation caused some concern during the planning stages, but God smoothed the way and we were able to hold the retreat one week after the election and in spite of high and ever-increasing prices. For the first time, a group from South Africa also attended, to the delight of their sisters from the north. The event was held at the National Park at Victoria Falls, where everyone in attendance enjoyed small lodges nestled along the Zambezi River, food prepared outside by two hired chefs, praise and worship under a huge shade tree, inspiring messages and testimonies and warm fellowship throughout.

Speakers included Kalengule Kaoma, who shared about our identity in Christ, Wendy Moore on the topic of hope, and Dorothy Nordstrom, who shared about her background and the love of God. I spoke about knowing Jesus, praying outside the box and grace. Other presentations encouraged the ladies to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Savior.  Dorothy Nordstrom, who serves as National Women's Ministry coordinator for WCG Canada, attended with her friend, Elaine Duchesne. Their presence, love and physical and material contributions were a blessing to everyone.

We concluded the retreat with a visit to spectacular Victoria Falls, where we experienced beautiful rainbows and perpetual rain with no clouds. We did get wet! Everyone later enjoyed dinner under the stars at the nearby Rainbow Hotel. The retreat was a much-needed spiritual boost for the African women and a real adventure for the Westerners. Friendships were made and renewed, and we left each other with hugs and hopes of next year in Zambia!
